Is it difficult to learn to sew?

Sewing is for everyone. Some people may get the hang of it a little sooner than others and it takes a bit of patience, but still... you can create the most fun and original projects. From very simple to very complex: the choice is yours!

Are you just starting your first sewing project?

Then we have some tips for you below.  Because where do you start and what do you need?

Cartridge

What do you want to sew? Don't start too heavy and start with a cotton fabric.

Patterned paper, pencil and eraser

Find your size on the pattern and trace the lines on the pattern paper with a pencil. Use your eraser if you have accidentally selected the wrong size line. Concentration is required!

Paper scissors

Cut out the pattern with paper scissors. You may need to allow an extra 1 to 2 cm for the hem. You can use a hem gauge and a highlighter for this. Then place the pattern pieces on the fabric as indicated in the pattern instructions.

Measuring tape

You will regularly need a tape measure. For example, to see whether the different pieces are cut the same way and how far they are from the edge of the fabric. You can also use it to measure your measurements, for example for a neck collar.

Glass-head pins

Pin the pattern pieces to the fabric with the pins.  Make sure that the right side of the fabric is always on the inside.

Fabric scissors

Once the pattern pieces are attached to the fabric, you can cut the fabric to size. Only use the fabric scissors to cut fabric. This will keep it in good condition for the longest time.

Sewing machine

And then... the real work can begin!

Check that you have chosen the right colour thread and a universal machine needle.

Wind the bobbin, attach the sewing machine needle and thread the thread.

Place the fabric under the sewing machine and ... begin!

Stitch rippers

You should not assume that everything will go well the first time. You can practise on a test piece of fabric first to familiarise yourself with the machine and learn how to sew straight. If you make a mistake, don't worry. You can loosen a piece of thread with the stitch ripper and then sew the piece again.

Sewing is learnt by being patient and just doing it. Of course, it's always good to ask for help. Take a look at YouTube for lots of inspiring ideas and sewing tips and join Kreativ mit Herbert Textil for more like-minded people.
